Of all the design principles, rhythm is my favorite. It is what draws your eye around the space. The focal point may draw you in, but it’s rhythm that keeps your attention. Rhythm is accomplished through repetition. Usually with color, texture, pattern or shape. For example:
A repeated accent color: red accent wall, red drape, red pillow
A repeated pattern: orange floral prints, orange floral pillow
A repeated shape: squares on wall, square pillows, squares on bench
A repeated theme: animal prints
These rhythmic patterns are best when used in odd numbers. For example, 5 pops of red, 3 pops of blue, etc.
Often just a little rearranging in your space can bring this design principle of rhythm into place and give your rooms a completed look.
